Privacy Policy

Atom Budget helps you work out how much of each paycheck already belongs to bills that haven't arrived yet. Doing that means handling information about your money, so this page explains exactly what we collect, why, who else sees it, and how you get rid of it.

1. Who we are

Atom Budget is operated by Bunker Studios LLC ("we", "us"), doing business as Atom Budget. We are the party responsible for the personal information described here. You can reach us at [email protected].

Atom Budget is intended for use by residents of the United States.

2. What we collect

Information you give us

Account details. Your email address, and your first and last name if you provide them. If you sign in with Google, we receive your email address, name and the fact that Google verified you. We never see your Google password.
Your budget. The incomes and expenses you enter: names, amounts, dates, how often they repeat, categories, colours and any notes you add. This is the substance of the product and it is the most sensitive thing we hold.
Waitlist email. If you join the waitlist for a paid plan, we store the address you submit so we can tell you when it opens.

Bank account information, if you connect one

Connecting a bank account is entirely optional and off by default. If you choose to connect one, we use Plaid Inc. to establish the connection, and we receive from Plaid: your account names and types, the last few digits of account numbers, current and available balances, and transaction records including amounts, dates, descriptions and merchant names.

We never receive or store your bank username or password. You enter those directly with Plaid or with your bank, and we have no access to them at any point.

Merchant name corrections. When you import a recurring item and change the merchant's name to something clearer, for example renaming a charge labelled "Battle" to "Battle.net", the pairing of the merchant's name and the name you chose is added to an anonymous tally so we can suggest better names to everyone. The tally holds only the merchant name, the chosen name and a count. It contains nothing about you or your account, is not connected to any record of yours, and no name is ever suggested to others until enough people have independently chosen it.

Information collected automatically

Technical data. Our hosting and database providers record standard server information such as IP address, browser type, request timestamps and error logs. This is used to keep the service running and to investigate abuse or faults.
Local storage. We store your sign-in session and your light or dark theme preference in your browser's local storage. These are not advertising cookies and are not shared with anyone.

3. What we do not do

These are worth stating plainly, because they are the things people most reasonably worry about with a budgeting app:

We do not sell your personal information. Not to anyone, for any price.
We do not share your information for advertising, cross-context behavioural or otherwise.
We run no analytics or tracking. There is no Google Analytics, no advertising pixel, no session recorder and no third-party tracking script anywhere in the product.
We do not use your financial data to train machine learning models.

4. How we use your information

To calculate your allocations, set-aside totals and forecasts, which is the core function of the app.
To create and secure your account, including signing you in and verifying a second factor if you enable one.
To keep balances current if you have connected a bank account, and to alert you when a balance falls below what your budget expects.
To respond when you contact us for support.
To send service messages such as email verification and password resets. These are not marketing.
To detect, investigate and prevent fraud, abuse and security incidents.
To meet legal obligations.

5. Who else sees it

We use a small number of service providers to run Atom Budget. Each one only receives what it needs to do its job, and none of them are permitted to use your information for their own purposes.

We may also disclose information if we are legally required to, or where it is necessary to protect the rights, safety or property of our users or of Atom Budget. If Atom Budget is ever acquired or merged, your information may transfer as part of that transaction, and we will tell you before it happens.

6. Plaid

If you connect a bank account, you are also entering a relationship with Plaid Inc. Plaid collects your credentials and financial information and handles them under its own privacy policy, which is worth reading: Plaid End User Privacy Policy.

By connecting an account you grant us permission to obtain that information from Plaid on your behalf. You can disconnect at any time from your settings, which revokes our access going forward. You can also review and manage every connection you have made through Plaid, across all the apps you use, at my.plaid.com.

7. How we protect it

All traffic between you and Atom Budget is encrypted with TLS, and data is encrypted at rest by our database provider.
Access to your rows is enforced by the database itself, not only by the application, so a flaw in the app cannot expose another person's budget.
Bank access tokens are held in a private area of the database that is unreachable through our public API.
Two-factor authentication is available on every account, and when you enable it, the database requires it too. A session that has not passed the second factor cannot read your data even through direct API access.

No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot promise otherwise. If we ever discover a breach affecting your information, we will notify you.

8. Keeping and deleting your information

We keep your information for as long as your account exists. You can delete your account at any time from Settings, and doing so permanently removes your account, every income and expense in it, your categories, and any bank connections. This is immediate and cannot be undone.

After deletion, residual copies may persist briefly in encrypted backups, and are overwritten on our provider's normal backup cycle. We may retain a minimal record of the deletion itself where we are legally required to.

9. Your rights

Wherever you live in the United States, you can ask us to give you a copy of your information, correct it, or delete it. Deletion and access are both available directly in the app, and you are welcome to email us instead.

If you are a California resident, the CCPA as amended by the CPRA gives you the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use it, to request a copy or deletion of it, to correct inaccuracies, and to not be discriminated against for exercising any of these rights. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by that law, so there is nothing for you to opt out of. To make a request, email [email protected]. We will verify your identity through the email address on your account before acting.

10. Children

Atom Budget is not intended for anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we will delete it.

11. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. If a change materially affects how we handle your information, we will tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect.
